Theme

It is a morning setting where you carry out your mundane activities like brushing, making breakfast, eating etc.The main motivation of this project was how we would feel if augmented reality was incorporated into our everyday life and how creative we can get with the technologies that are available to us right now. How to make life more fun than it already is. Instead of just eating out of a mundane cereal box everyday how fun would it be to interact with it. How would it be to see the objects placed close by talk or react to each other. This gives us a sense of control and an interactivity that we previously did not have with the items. Subsequently we can have some real fun animations for the healthy food and dark ones for the junk food, which can motivate the kids to eat healthy. Now let us take a deeper look at the project.

Notable Featrues

In my Augmented Reality Breakfast scene I have the following items:

  • Placemat: This scene has 25 items including the floor and the 3D texts(one behind the sofa and one on the TV that appears later on). Regular home with a person named, ”Malcom” and his sofa and TV set, two dancing characters(the bear and the parrot), two platforms, 11 food items. Two videos and shaders are appear/applied during the interactions of the characters.

  • Drink: This scene has a total of 7 items.Coca Cola with a bear, tree, bush, 3D text object and an ancient rock and a particle system.

  • Drink 2: This scene has a total of 8 objects. Crystal Drink with a couple of crystals, 3D text object, wolf, tree, a particle system and a platform.

  • Cereal Box 1: This scene has a total of 16 objects. Froot loops box with a froot loops image on the front, an embedded video with a 3D text, ingredients on one side, a poem on the other, trees, rocks, an animated bird and umbrellas.

  • Cereal Box 2: This scene has a total of 7 objects. It has the model of death star, a UFO fighter ship, a jet plane, an alien, the character pickle rick from the show “Rick and Morty” with a 3D text and a shield of doom.

  • Magazine: This scene has total of 20 objects.

    1. First page has buttons to navigate back and forth an animated satellite, a tree, a model of the Earth.

    2. Second page has a wall, a picture of a graph regarding the news, a video of the news by bbc, 3D text, model of trump, a character from mixamo.com, and a picture of trump.

    3. The third page has three 3D text objects, 3 videos and an animated football model.

Thoughts while developing the project

The first thing that people see is the placemat. So I wanted to give a nice and homely feel that the people feel comfortable with. It is in no sense a “trying to replicate the reality” project but it’s just cool to have a sense of comfort (in my opinion).

For the cereal box we could have a colorful, cheerful scenario if it were a healthy box and a dark and a dingy one if unhealthy. Same is the case with the drinks. This happens when the objects are placed on the placemat. Also an advertisement of the item plays on the TV when it is placed on the placemat. I wanted to create a standoff and show the ingredient comparison and an animated fight with fruits on one side and junk food on the other to signify the healthy and unhealthy side. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to see the animation through.

Magazine in real life is usually a two sided page. This is only because the pages need to be bound together in the form of a booklet. With augmented reality we can view one entire article in a single page, watch videos and even interact and see interesting visualizations.

I also wanted a space like Sci-fi box that has weird (or cool) objects. I call this the Void Box. It’s just a bunch of wild ideas put together. To make some interaction when one item comes close to another I added sounds for that particular interaction and graphics in form of particles. The ingredients of the items appear over the placemat when place on it. The person on the placemat also reacts to the items placed on it, indicating his liking towards it. When the boxes are removed the scene reverts back to its original state.

How does the project work?

On detecting the placemat a jazz melody music begins to play. It stops as and when the camera stops detecting it. The placemat two protruding brown platforms on the surface. When an item is place on the platform the ad is played and the ingredients are shown above the television. On removing the item the ad stops playing. The person shows actions as to if he likes the project or not. When 2 items are placed on the placemat, the items on the scene dissolve and new items appear. There is a dance off battle that happens between two characters. Once the battle is done the scene returns back to original.

The cereal box has a parrot that dances on the top.

The coca-cola object has an animated bear.

The crystal drink has a rotating base.

On bringing the three items mentioned above close together interesting animation particles and sounds are revealed.

The Void box has a darth vader bgm attached to it that plays when it is tracked. It has animations on all the surfaces except the bottom.

The magazine has buttons to move back and forth. Each page has models and a video(s) attached to it .

How to run the project?

  1. Open Unity, preferably 2018 version. Reimport the project if its a new version

  2. Download the assets from the project here

  3. Open a project in Unity and copy the Assets folder into the Asset folder on the new project

  4. Open the SampleScene.unity from the Assets folder

  5. Once it loads upload, integrate Vuforia and try running it with a local webcam

  6. Then upload it to any device that supports AR
